Gale Banks, one of the most respected names in boating power in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, is returning to the marine power business in a big way with a twin-turbo diesel V-8 concept engine based on the 6.6-liter GM Duramax. This exciting new project out of Banks Marine Engines in Azusa, Calif., made its world debut Feb. 14, 2008, in the GMC exhibit presented by GM Powertrain during the 67th Miami International Boat Show.
Slated to be available at three horsepower levels, this Banks Marine concept engine features the company’s signature twin turbos mounted to a revolutionary Banks-design intake manifold.

Among the engine’s other features are its adaptability to just about any style of drive and the fact that a closed-engine coolant circuit and twin water-cooled turbochargers are part of the package. The twin turbochargers were designed to deliver unmatched performance across the entire engine speed range. This combination is sure to result in an engine that will allow the boat to get on plane quickly, cruise efficiently, and improve top speed.
This concept twin-turbo Duramax V-8, based on General Motors' Duramax 6600 diesel engine, will be both Banks Marine's and GM's first marine diesel offering. This most recent partnership with GM extends Banks' long-term relationship with the auto manufacturer. The concept engine, which is receiving very favorable reviews, will be sold through Banks.
